Autobiography written by one of the most interesting characters of the Siglo de Oro. Catalina de Erauso, the Nun Ensign, was born in San Sebastian in 1585 or 1592, and after escaping from a convent at a very young age, she lived as a man for the rest of his life, jumping to the Americas where he was a soldier, adventurer, merchant, gambler... and always a quarrelsome person with a sword in the hand. His identification with the male gender was such that he defied social conventions and managed to get a King (Philip IV) and a Pope (Urban VIII) to allow him to continue living as such, which perhaps makes Catalina de Erauso, or Alonso Díaz Ramírez de Guzmán, the first transgender writer in Spanish literature. But even beyond this, this work is one of the few autobiographies of non-religious characters of the 17th century, and an exciting narrative that reminds us that reality, sometimes, surpasses fiction.
