Description
Starting a town from scratch and building it into a prosperous community is always an uncertain goal. Bull City, Kansas was at first the quintessential 1870s frontier settlement in the American West - primitive, a bit wild, and certainly rough around the edges. But its earliest residents had a dream of building a better life there for themselves and their families, and after fifteen years the town had changed both its name and its "wild and woolly" image and became a sedate and comfortable place to live. In the early 20th Century town resident Orville Grant Guttery gathered together original letters, newspaper clippings, unpublished writings and other primary documentation written by those who had once called Bull City home, preserving their tales and memories about real people, adventures, triumphs, joys, trials, and hardships for future generations to eventually discover and enjoy. Fifty years after Guttery's death his collection has been edited at last into a book that will not only appeal to all lovers of the American West but will also prove an invaluable resource as a social and historical record for scholars probing this area and period of American history.
