Description
A dramatic introduction to J Edgar Hoover, his nearly 50 years of civil service under 8 U.S. Presidents, and the growth of his personal fiefdom, the Federal Bureau of Investigation. An all-work, no play type, he headed that agency from 1924 until death retired him in 1972. Building the FBI he pioneered the use of deportations against suspected communists, advanced forensic science, tracked down notorious gangsters, and used the Lindbergh baby kidnapping to push legislation that declared kidnapping a federal crime--all while viewing the security of Americans as his personal responsibility. He also never married, was devoted to his mother, and demanded absolute loyalty from both his secretary and his lifelong friend, Clyde Tolson, all while supposedly keeping secret files on most politicians and celebrities. This intensely cautious, enigmatic, and private man was America's premier secret policeman: feared, admired, reviled, and revered.
