Description
Annie Ruff was born on 29 August 1824 at Fort Atkinson on the Missouri River, the most distant U.S. Army outpost at that time. She was the daughter of John Dougherty, Indian agent of the tribes of the upper Missouri River, and his Phiadelphia-bred wife, Mary Hertzog. Her husband, Charles F. Ruff, was an officer and veteran of the Mexican War, Indian Wars, and the War Between the States. Subsequently widowed, Annie Ruff capably performed her duties as head of Household - all the while being denied, as a woman, the opportunity to "stand the floor" with men. Regardless, she was enabled to greatly augment the value of her estate by the purchase of stock in mining, manufacuring, and railroad companies, to such extent as to capably rear her four children to adulthood. Annie Ruff died on 11 July 1909 at her summer cottage overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Bay Head, New Jersey. - from flyleaf.
