Thane is racing against time to find a powerful magical amulet before his once-friend, Cruin, does. With the help of a new friend, Raynara, he seeks this amulet. Every time things seem to be going their way, something new appear to trip them up. Will they get the amulet first? If they do not, Cruin, already a very powerful mage, will surely kill them.
New revelations bring new questions, but the old troubles still remain; Cruin is so powerful. Thane and his friends had been tested and tried now for long enough, and are ready to commit to one last battle.
Thane and his friends thought that their troubles were over, and that they'd solved everything; they were wrong. Old problems have taken on new forms, and Cruin is still as dangerous as ever. When an old enemy seeks Thane and his friends' help, they expect trouble and find it. Cruin has woven for them a web of trouble, and there are so many threads that they can't tell which spell luck and which spell doom.
While Leuco works determinedly in the Burning Lands to prepare for coming trouble, Thane and his friends seek allies in the city of Rerecros where they find the help they seek to bring Cruin to heel, but they also find just as much trouble. New enemies abound. Everything hangs in the balance, with events swirling out of control and Cruin calling the shots.
While Cruin still searches for the pieces of the shattered amulet Thane and company set out to stop him. Regretfully, it is not that simple. Enemies, old and new, combine to complicate everything they touch, although new allies do the same. All in all, things have become ever more complicated.
Thane is finding out how quickly friends can become enemies and enemies can become allies - and he'll need as many allies as he can get if he wants him and his friends to survive. Finally, he's come to a decision: Cruin must die, or he'll hunt them forever.
